Before buying a wooden porch swing, it’s important to make sure that the swing you are buying meets a number of important criteria. Here is a list of what you should look for in a swing, along with some reasons why it’s important.
Hand Made - A hand made swing is certainly a must when buying a porch swing. This is because each piece is individually crafted, ensuring better cuts and a smoother finish.
Cypress - Cypress has been called the “eternal wood” because of its ability to stand up to the elements. A cypress swing is as durable as teak, while being as little as one-tenth the price! Don’t buy a swing made from exotic woods only to watch it rot on your porch.
Size - Be sure that the porch swing you choose is the correct size to fit on your porch, and to fit the number of people you expect to be swinging on it.
Accessories - Would you like your swing to have a cup holder? An interesting question, perhaps, but certainly something to think about. What will you want with you while on your porch swing? Keep that in mind when looking at what’s available.
The Porch Swings I Love Most
Of course, I have a very strong preference in porch swings. There is one particular artisan who builds beautiful, durable porch swings from Cypress. His name is Ted Leger (pronounced Lay-shay), and he’s based in Louisiana (where a lot of cypress trees grow). All of his swings are hand made, and he can ship anywhere in the USA.
I strongly recommend you

There is nothing better to do on a hot, lazy afternoon than to lounge in your favorite outdoor swing while reading, napping or just watching the world pass by. And when evening approaches and the breeze gets cooler, an outdoor swing is also the perfect place to sit and unwind after a hard day while you watch the fireflies light up the ever darkening sky.
The truth is that an outdoor wooden swing offers more than just a place to sit and relax. Seating areas created with wooden swings become outdoor rooms and extensions of the home in which you can enjoy quality time with friends and family.
You can place a wooden swing in your favorite spot of your flower garden, on your porch, overlooking a pond or just simply place it in your back yard. No matter where you decide to put it, a wooden swing will enhance your outdoor space and may quickly become the favorite spot in the house.
And there are so many different wooden swings to choose from that you are sure to find one to perfectly match your personality, budget and existing décor. You can choose from several different styles including Nantucket, Cottage, Adirondack and Rustic, just to name a few. You can also have your choice of several different types of premium, durable wooden materials including teak, cypress, pine and cedar.
Take for instance the Sheraton porch swing crafted by Kingsley-Bate. Hand carved from Javanese teak wood in the ageless, romantic 18th century style, this wooden swing is breathtaking in its exquisite beauty. This particular wooden swing is assembled with precise mortise and tenon joinery, and will provide your family with a comfortable place to relax for decades to come.
Since the Sheraton porch swing is constructed with teak, it is extremely durable. Teak, a hard strong durable yellowish-brown wood, grows in the region of Southeast Asia and is harvested from the surrounding forests and teak plantations by the locals. The wood of the teak tree is naturally resistant to insects, warping, splintering and the elements, which makes it an ideal wood for creating outdoor furniture.
If you prefer something a little more classic in design, perhaps the Nantucket porch swing would be your best bet. This wooden swing features heavy construction and heavily scaled pieces crafted from Southern Yellow Pine. In addition to a natural finish, there are 28 color finish options available with the Nantucket porch swing which includes eye-catching colors such as lime, mauve and canary or more sedate colors such as sunny yellow, island green and white. You can also choose from several finish options such as natural, pristine, washed and distressed.
No matter which wooden swing that you choose, you can be assured that you are selecting a piece of furniture that fits you and your family and one that will remain beautiful and durable for decades. Why not take a look? You may be surprised by how many choices you have.

What would a front porch be without a porch swing? There are many different styles of such swings that you can have whether you decide to build your own or buy one ready made. A swing can be free standing attached to a single post on each side or you might like the A-frame support style. The plans for such swings are only cheap, ranging from $13 to $21 dollars and make the perfect project for those that like working with wood.
The perfect swing has an adjustable seat so that it will suit all members of the family. The back adjusts so that you can recline or sit up straight. To build such a swing, you won’t need to invest in a lot of expensive tools, as you only need the basics of a hammer or screwdriver, a saw and a tape measure. You will need to buy two types of lumber - treated pine for the frame and armrests and hard wood for the seat and back. You will also need to buy galvanized chain, galvanized coach bolts, 4 inch nails, and wood screws. The plans for each type of swing will provide you with the dimensions that you need for cutting the wood.
After you complete the end frames, you have to make the seat frame. Then you can make the support for the back of the seat and fit the seat slats in place. If you affix a piece of board to the slats, there will be something for them to rest on while you are attaching them in place. Once you have this completed, then you can create a design in the back of the seat, such as curves on the top, or you can leave it straight across. Once you have all this done, then you can fit the armrests in place. Lastly, thread the chain through the holes in the armrests, through the bottom of the end frames and back up again. The holes for the chain should be bigger than the chain so it can move freely.

You woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Your toast was burnt and the coffee was sub-par. You had a flat when you got to your car. Then the car wouldn’t start. You picked up another fresh cup of coffee that spilled all over your shirt on the way to work. Your boss just had a bad morning start as well. What are you thinking about right now?
Rewind! You woke up on the right side of the bed. Breakfast was fulfilling. You turned the key to your car and your favorite song in the whole world was playing as your car quickly revved up to desirable capabilities. You bought coffee and breakfast snacks for everybody in the office. Today was your boss’s best day he has ever had. What are you thinking of about right now?!
Either way is possible, but at the end of the day all anybody would want to do is to kick their shoes off as soon as possible, and as quickly as possible so they could hop into a comfortable position made available to them, while owning a good old-fashioned outdoor porch swing?! The outdoor porch swing as shown in many movies that we have seen since we were yet children has been such an important item to any family that wants to keep the old saying, “the family that ‘(your word here)’ together, stays together,” cliché, as true as it was when it was first spoken or written! Many older people know of their own grandparents owning outdoor porch swings, while they were still, yet, children. It’s only by imagination alone that allows us to fathom how long the outdoor porch swing has been in existence and still give people the comfort ability that so many are still seeking for. It’s only a matter of time that after using an outdoor porch swing as children, that we, as grown folk, can even understand why the outdoor porch swing is such an important item to own, in order to, finally, close the “book” on the day that has kept us from what we’ve most desired all day! It is to sit on our outdoor porch swing especially with a loved one that sincerely cares how our day went!
The outdoor porch swing is made out of so many materials that it is almost impossible to name the material that they are not made of. The styles can fit anyone’s particular chic, while never taking away from the appearance of the outside “style” already set from previous paint jobs and outdoor furniture. Whether sticking with the classic look like so many before be sure that companies are doing nothing less than making sure that your own particular style will be found somewhere!

In your search for furniture for your porch, don’t forget to look at the various varieties of porch swings. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, a swing for the porch is a wise investment because you have a comfortable seat. There are some different styles to consider and all are reasonably priced. If you feel inclined, you can also build your own.
Depending on what you are looking for in a swing, the most inexpensive kind of swing is the mission style flat bottomed one made of oak. The back is made of slats with spaces in between and for added comfort you can make or buy cushions for the seat. This swing typically costs about $100, but you do have to try it out because the seat is usually short and not meant for lying back. The swing comes in pieces, but is easy to assemble with the instructions included.
The cedar swing is the next swing that costs a little more - about $200. Cedar is an exceptional choice for an outdoor swing because the wood doesn’t ort easily and resists insect infestation. These swings usually have contoured seats, but to make it more comfortable, you can add padded cushions. If you buy a swing made from ordinary cedar, then you will have to add a coat of sealant to keep it looking good. You don’t need to paint the wood to have it last a long time.
Not all swings are made of wood, as you will see when you take a look at the wrought iron swings available. These add a timeless look to any porch and for the price of less than $200, they are well worth it. They are heavier and have a powdered coat to prevent them from rusting so you can leave it out in the rain.
Although they are more expensive, averaging about $400 each, wicker swings look right at home on a porch. The tight wicker weave performs a cozy place for sitting and enjoying the afternoon sun. The frame is made of metal and the wicker is completely weather resistant. You also won’t have to do any assembly because these swings are fully assembled when you buy them.
Visit an online retailer to get a look at the swings you can have for your porch and place your order so that it comes right to your door.
Now that you have your porch completed, you will want to look at the varieties of porch swings to choose one that will compliment your porch and provide a comfortable seat for you to enjoy the view. You can build your own from plans or kits that you can purchase or you can buy a swing that is already made. You can have a freestanding swing or one that is attached to posts in an A-frame support. If you have the time, you can easily build a swing for far less than the cost of one already made.
When choosing the perfect swing for your porch, you want to choose one that will seat two or three people comfortably. The back of the swing should be adjustable so that you can sit upright or lay back when you are feeling kind of lazy. The only tools you will need for this project are a hammer, a saw and a measuring tape. When you purchase the lumber, make sure it is pressure treated so that it will withstand the elements of the weather. The wood of choice is pine for the frame and armrests and hardwood for the seat and back.
Galvanized chain is essential for attaching the seat itself to the frame so that it will swing. You will also need to buy galvanized steel bolts, nails and wood screws. When you buy one of the plans for building a swing for your porch, the instructions will give you the measurements that you need to cut each piece. If you buy a kit, then all the material is already cut to the correct measurements.
You make the frame for the ends of the swing first and then the frame for the seat. Then you make the frame for the back and fit the slats for the seat in place. This is an easy process if you attach a board across the slats so they have something to rest on while you put the slats in place. If you are really talented, you can create curves along the back, but it looks great just straight across. The armrests go in place next and lastly you thread the chain through the armrests and attach it to the frame for the swing. Just make sure you make the holes larger than the chain so that they will move freely.

As spring and summer come around you’ll want to spend more time outside. If you don’t have one, consider investing in a porch or garden swing to give you a comfortable and beautiful place to sit and enjoy the outdoors. We review a few of the popular styles in this article.
The Classic Cedar Porch Swing - averaging around $200 in price, this swing follows the traditional image of what most people think of when they think of porch swings. Made of cedar it resists rot and has a built in insect repellent. If you get the right design there is contoured seating so you don’t need to purchase additional padded seating. If the swing isn’t pressure treated then you’ll want to apply a sealant about twice a year to protect the wood. Reviews of this type of swing have indicated it’s a classic style with natural beauty that lasts a long time if cared for properly. No need to paint!
Oak, mission style flat bottom swing - if you’re looking for really inexpensive swings they do exist for less than $100 and this one of them. Sporting a flat bottom you may want to add padded cushions (purchased separately) or make your own. It’s built simply in the mission style with open back slats and made entirely of oak. Some of the cheaper versions have short seat depths, so if you’re the type who needs to lean back and have longer seat support this may not be the option for you. Assembly is fairly easy.
Wrought Iron Swings - the idea is foreign to some, but you don’t have to buy a wooden porch swing. They do come in other materials such as metal (even wicker). The wrought iron swing looks very Victorian, its heavier than many wooden styles, and most are powder coated to prevent rusting. If you do notice rusting be sure to contact the manufacturer or store you purchased from as the warranty should cover any fast rusting, they just shouldn’t rust at all. The price runs from $150-$300 depending on the design, size and manufacturer.
Wicker porch swings - Another extravagance for some, this beautiful design will run you about $400-$500. Made of a tight wicker weave, it’s often shaped more for the curves of your body and some say it’s more comfortable than standard wood. They typically have a metal frame and a resin wicker that is weather resistant. Unlike many of the wooden types you will not have to put this swing together, they arrive (or are picked up) fully assembled. This can add to the shipping cost if purchased online, due to the bulk, but for many its worth it.

When you want a stunning outdoor living space to enjoy, the last thing you need is to surround yourself with furniture options that are less than the best. That is why you should get something made from teak wood when you decide on a furnishing and teak porch swings are fabulous, relaxing choices that cannot be beat.
Teak wood happens to be one of those materials that are best when showcased in a lovely outdoor living space. As you put together your deck, patio, garden or porch area, teak porch swings would be a fine option for placing in those spots. Why? Well for one, remember it is made from teak wood, which means that it can take a beating from the elements without breaking down. Teak wood is even used to make ships that sail on the high seas, so, if it’s a top of the line choice for those ships, then you know what you get for your outdoor space will be on point and reliable.
Another reason why teak porch swings would be a fine choice is because they are extremely comfortable. For example, you can get one that has a highly relaxing design featuring a contoured seat the blends into a supportive backrest while being finished with curving armrests. Or, you can get one that has a straight, flat seat that is still very comfortable that is then combined with a curving backrest and armrests.
A third reason why teak porch swings are such a solid outdoor furnishing selection is because they have one gorgeous appearance. Again, this is because of the teak wood they are made from. This wood has a stunning, natural golden tone when new that fades to a distinguished gray color over time. Both are very appealing to the eye and will add to the look of your outdoor space. Now, if you want yours to keeps its natural tone even after you’ve had it a couple of years, all you have to do is apply a teak protectant to it at the beginning of every season. Other than that though, it will require no other maintenance but an occasional washing.

It is a synch to breeze through all the online stores and their offerings since you don’t have to leave the comfort of sitting in front of your computer screen to do it. Now, just imagine after the simple assembly and installation of teak porch swings how you will be able to sit back with your loved one and just want the time go by. These are the kinds of things that dreams and memories are made of for sure.

Porch swings are a fabulous edition to any home and any porch. Porch swings are a wonderful way to kick back and relax at any time, especially after a hard days work. When purchasing a porch swing, a person has many different options on what material they would like their porch swing to be, what style, and what color depending on what sort of material the swing is made from. Porch swing are constructed from all sorts of different woods, plastics, resin plastic, even certain metals like aluminum. Porch swings can add a sort of casual touch and feel to a person’s home. Porch swings are decorative addition to any porch or deck. There is really a porch swing for every setting.
When a person is choosing the right porch swing for their porch, deck, or patio they have some things to take into consideration. Before buying a porch swing, one needs to know exactly how much space they have free for the addition of a porch or patio swing. Covered porches are usually not a problem to add a porch swing to. Covered porches already have the capabilities of holding up a porch swing without any installation of support beams or other items. Patios and decks do not usually come with this over head support that is truly ideal for the porch swing scenario. So, when looking to purchase a porch swing, one must take things like these into consideration. Sometimes a glider can be the more ideal piece of furniture for someone who does not have easy access to the support a porch swing will need.
Wood is usually the basic material of which porch swings are constructed from. Cedar is always a very popular wood due to its amazing durability. With that said, teak is also the next in line for durability and popularity. However, cedar is a little more inexpensive than that of the classier teak. Other popular woods include oak, poplar, cypress, cherry, yellow pine, and shorea. Poplar is another wood that is very durable and long lasting in the outdoor environment. After taking many options and ideas into consideration, one will then want to decide what kind of finish they will want on their porch swing if it is being constructed from wood. If a person is not buying a wooden porch swing they will still have the style to decide on. There are many different styles in every different material of porch swings. Resin porch swings are popular in white and green as is aluminum. Some of the designs include classic craftsmanship design, Adirondack seat backing styles, painted finishes, stained finishes, carved designs, and even rustic log designs.
Whatever design you choose, you are choosing a great addition to any home. Any porch, deck, or patio will be gaining some style with the addition of a porch swing. A new porch swing can even be an inexpensive endeavor if you decide to go with a cheaper wood or material. Teak, cedar, and poplar are the most expensive woods by far.

Can a wooden porch swing make the difference in selling a house during this undeniable real estate slump? Unless you live in one of the very few prime areas where properties have held their value, you’re probably going to have a tough time. The way to get buyers’ attention is to make your place look not just good, not just great, but remarkable. You need to add that something extra that distinguishes a house from a home. It’s called curb appeal, and it’s what makes a potential buyer widen their eyes and say, “Wow!”
Curb appeal encompasses everything a person sees when they drive by or approach a property: the paint or siding, the windows, and the landscaping. These things all come together to produce the appeal, a voice that shouts out, “Welcome!” Some of these areas are not readily altered, but you can do some really simple things to make a definite difference. Your aim is to create that inviting mood, and it’s easy to do.
Any home naturally looks more inviting if there’s an obvious place to sit for a spell. If you’re fortunate enough to have an ample porch, why not add a swing? With affordable prices and a variety of porch swings to choose from it is an easy addition to your outdoor decor. This timeless accessory has always meant casual conversation with loved ones on pleasant evenings or even under the protection of the porch roof on rainy days. The classic wooden swing will draw potential buyers to your home with its wholesome magnetism.
Flowers in containers also go a long way in setting your house apart. Window boxes express a homey feeling with their color, texture, and old-fashioned appeal, and simply because they’re proof that somebody loves living there. Depending on the home’s style, you can go for any look from formal to cottage to something very simple, say petunias in just one color chosen to coordinate with the front door or other trim. Set a bench on the porch next to a container of cheerful flowers for an easy curb appeal boost.
If you don’t have the space on the porch, you can put a bench or stand swing on a level spot in the yard to accent plantings or just to create the inviting scene that you need. Picture a white Polywood swing flanked by robust hydrangeas-the combination of blue and white is simple yet visually stunning. It’s especially pertinent in a seaside setting, where hydrangeas are de rigeur, and the tough, synthetic Polywood resists damage from salt air and relentless sun. It’s also very heavy and will shrug off sea breezes that can topple pieces of less substance.
So, head outside now, take a step back from that “For Sale” sign, and imagine a picture of your home with its drive-by appeal turned up a couple of notches. Envision a wooden porch swing with a fresh coat of teak oil, shining in the dappled light. Picture it-and then make it happen. It’ll be the cherry on top that could turn a house hunter’s maybe into an “I’ve got to have it!”
